About Studying In Australia

What are the admission requirements?
The minimum entry requirement for all universities in Australia is a three year degree. For more specific details it is best to contact the TEACH office by email or by phone.
Can I apply to TEACH if I live outside of Ontario?
TEACH accepts applications from students all over the country. We have even processed applications for students who are working abroad. Since other provinces have different regulations for teacher certification, we recommend that students verify their program of study with the College of Teachers/Ministry of Education in their province to ensure that the program meets their requirement. This should be done before the commencement of your program.
When do the teacher training programs in Australia start?
The courses in Australia normally commence in February of every year. Some universities have select courses that begin in July as well. The courses normally conclude in November or June depending on the program.
What type of accommodation is available?
Most students attending Australian universities choose to live off campus. Often a group of 3 or 4 students will rent an apartment together in order to cut costs. If you wish, you can also choose to stay in residence during your stay in Australia. The costs of accommodation varies depending on location, facilities etc. On campus accommodation is available through the universities. Please ensure that you secure your temporary accommodation through the university prior to your departure. More information will be given to the students during the universities presentations that normally take place in October.
Will I be picked up at the airport?
All students will be met at the airport and taken to the university campus. Each student should contact the university and provide them with their arrival details. If the university has requested an arrival form, the student should ensure that this is returned promptly.
Do I need a Student Visa?
All students intending to study in Australia must have a Student Visa.
  • Generally, you can apply for your student visa 120 days before the commencement of the course. Australian High Commission
  • Applications for student visas generally take up to 4 to 8 weeks to process.
  • For student Visa enquiries please contact 1-888-990-8888 or email helpdesk@immi.gov.au
  • Please do not purchase your airline ticket until you have obtained your student visa.
Are there deadlines for applying to TEACH?
There are no specific cut off dates. We advise students to apply early for best results. Most students apply while they are in their final year of university. At this time most students have an up to date transcript that lists all of their courses.
If I am unable to attend the program that I applied to, can defer my offer?
Most universities will grant students one deferral to the following year. An email should be sent to the university officially requesting a deferral, after you have received an offer of a place. All students should also notify TEACH of their deferral.
Will I have to make a deposit to the university in order to secure my place?
Most of the universities request a deposit to secure your place in the Faculty of Education. Deposits and acceptance documents must be returned directly to the university as TEACH does not process tuition payments or acceptance forms. You should ensure that all acceptance documents and payments are returned prior to the deadline.
Do I have to purchase Medical/Travel Insurance?
There is basic health insurance normally referred to as Overseas Student Health Coverage that all international students must pay. This health fee is part of the tuition you will pay to the university. It is approximately A0$315 per person. There are no exceptions with regard to the OSHC, as it is a rule of the Australian government. More specific details about the health coverage will be provided at the Australian universities information sessions.
*Please note that you must take out travel insurance if you are travelling outside of the country in which you are studying
What should I do about my OHIP coverage?
You should inform OHIP or your provincial health plan that you are intending to leave Canada for a specific period of time. Contact your provincial Ministry of Health or OHIP office. The contact details for OHIP are 1-800-268-1154. Website: www.gov.on.ca/health
Will there be information sessions for the universities?
Information sessions are usually held on weekends in downtown hotels in Toronto during the month of October. More specific information about the dates and locations will be provided on the TEACH web site. This will be updated as the information becomes available. We encourage all students to attend the information sessions as this is an opportunity to meet the staff from the various universities and ask specific questions about the program.
Can I apply for OSAP?
Many of the universities are OSAP eligible. Most students are awarded OSAP loans for the Faculty of Education courses in Australia based on their financial need. Those students who are living in other Canadian provinces should apply directly to the Student Loans Centre of their own province.
Check OSAP/Canlearn website for more specific information
Will I need a passport?
All students intending to study in Australia must have a passport. Please ensure that your passport is valid for the full length of your stay outside Canada.
Should I assign power of attorney to a friend or family member?
You should appoint a relative or friend as your Power of Attorney in case you require your OSAP funds deposited in a Canadian bank account. As well this makes it much easier to have funds transferred from your Canadian account to your Australian account.
How long will it take for me to be assessed by the universities?
Normally the assessment of your application will take 6-8 weeks. Once your assessment is complete you will be notified by TEACH of the outcome. You can also track the status of your application via your TEACH account.
Can I teach in Australia once I finish my course?
Canadians may teach in Australia after the completion of their course. More information regarding teaching in Australia will be given out to students at the various university presentations. You must ensure that you are allowed to stay on in Australia by the Australian Immigration authorities. TEACH also recruits teachers for New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Am I at a disadvantage because I trained outside of Canada?
Over the last 10 years the school boards in Ontario and other Canadian provinces have found that TEACH graduates make excellent teachers because they have been exposed to another educational system as well as the Canadian school system. This wider experience of teaching has enhanced their employment and promotion prospects.
Will I have to make my own travel arrangements?
Most students choose to travel with the TEACH group to Australia. Discounted flights will be arranged by TEACH through a travel agency. If you wish, you may choose to make your own travel arrangements. Students who book on their own must inform the university of their arrival date, flight details and arrange for airport pick up. Family and friends traveling with you are also eligible for discounted fares to Australia.
Where do I send my tuition payment?
All fees and acceptance documents must be returned directly to the university as TEACH does not process tuition payments. All payments and acceptance documents should be received by the university prior to the deadline indicated on the letter of offer. Tuition fees vary depending on the university. They are also linked to the changing values of the Canadian dollar as well as the Australian dollar. The universities usually make a small increase in tuition fees each year.
Can I work while I am studying?
International students are allowed to work in Australia for up to 20 hours a week on a student visa during term time and full time during the holiday periods.

Please do not hesitate to contact TEACH if you require any more information.
Scholarships
There are some scholarships available to TEACH students from the Australian Faculties of Education. Each university that offers a scholarship will have this information listed on their page on the TEACH website.
