About Studying In Britain

Are there accommodations available?
Temporary and/or permanent accommodation will be provided. You may choose to live on or off campus. Most students going to the UK prefer to live on campus. More specific information about accommodation will be provided at the information sessions held in Canada by UK university staff.
Is there airport pick up in the UK?
Most UK universities will meet students that are flying with the TEACH group of students. These students will be picked up at the airport and taken to their on campus accommodations. It is your responsibility to inform the university of your arrival time and flight number and to arrange airport pick up.
What is the deadline for applying?
TEACH does not operate on a deadline system but it is advisable to submit an application early for best results. Most students apply in their final year of study.
Can I defer my offer?
Most universities will allow a student one deferral to the following intake. An email should be sent to the university officially requesting a deferral after you have received an offer of a place. Students should also notify TEACH of their deferral.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Most of the universities request a deposit to secure your place in the Faculty of Education. All deposits and acceptance forms must be returned to the university as TEACH does not accept tuition payments or acceptance documents. All students should strictly adhere to the deadlines outlined in their letter of offer.
What are the admission requirements?
The basic criteria for all universities in the UK is a three year degree. Some universities have specific requirements depending on which program you are attending. Normally Grade 12 English, and Grade 11 Math  and Science are required for students applying to Primary Programs in the U.K. Once you have decided on your universities, it is best to contact TEACH regarding specific university requirements.
Do I need health coverage in the UK?
Health coverage is provided free of charge by the British government when you are attending a course longer than 6 months in Britain. All details about health coverage will be given to you in your offer acceptance package provided by the university.
OHIP
You should inform OHIP or your provincial health plan that you are intending to leave Canada for a specific period of time. Please contact the OHIP office to advise them of this at 1-800-268-1154 www.gov.on.ca/health

*Please note that you must take out extra insurance if you are travelling outside the country in which you are studying.
Do I need to send my high school transcripts?
All High School transcripts must be submitted with your application if you are applying to UK universities. A photocopy of your transcript is sufficient.
When are information sessions held?
The UK information sessions are usually held on weekends in downtown Toronto hotels during the months of Jan & Feb. More specific information about the dates and locations will be provided on the TEACH website as the information becomes available.
Can I apply for OSAP?
Many of the universities are OSAP eligible. Most students are awarded OSAP loans for the Faculty of Education courses in the UK based on financial need. Those students who are living in other Canadian provinces should apply directly to the Student Loans Centre of their own province.

Will I need a Passport?
All students intending to study in the UK must have a valid passport. Please ensure that your passport is valid for the full length of your stay outside of Canada. Some students who have parents who were born in European countries may be eligible to apply for a European passport. For more information on this, you must apply to the Embassy of the country in which your parents were born.
Should I assign power of attorney to a friend or family member?
You should appoint a relative/friend as your Power of Attorney in case you require your OSAP funds deposited in a Canadian bank or in the event that you require money transferred to you in the UK.
Who can write an academic letter of reference?
An academic letter of reference can be written by professor, a teaching assistant or a high school teacher. Often the students find that it is difficult to contact a professor who knew them well at university as they may be on leave or perhaps the classes were too large. In this case, an academic reference from a high school teacher or university tutor will suffice.
Who can write a volunteer letter of reference?
A volunteer letter of reference can be written by a teacher, sports coach or supervisor who was able to observe you in a setting with children. If possible, it is best to have volunteer work in the classroom with different age groups of students.
Response to your application
Application assessments normally take up to 3 weeks. For the U.K. universities, you will be asked to attend a personal interview in Toronto at their information session or be available for a telephone interview. Often a conditional offer is given to a student upon a successful interview. TEACH will inform you immediately when any information is received from the university about the status of your application.
Scholarships
There are some scholarships available to TEACH students from the UK Faculties of Education. Each university that offers a scholarship will have this information listed on their page on the TEACH website.
Teachable subjects
The Secondary Program assessors of each university make the decisions regarding teaching methods for the program. They will try to ensure that you have two teaching methods if you choose to qualify for the Secondary Program. Students should be aware that the English Faculties of Education only offer one teachable subject to all students.
TEACH Graduates in Canada
Over the past years that TEACH has been sending students overseas, the school boards in Ontario and other Canadian provinces have found that TEACH graduates make excellent teachers. These students have experienced another educational system and have been exposed to a different culture which makes them very well-rounded individuals. This wider experience of teaching has enhanced the employment and promotion prospects of these future teachers.
Teaching positions in the UK
Over the years some TEACH students have chosen to take up teaching positions in Britain. You should verify if this is possible with the immigration authorities in the UK.

* Please note that the TEACH company is recruiting teachers for the U.K., New Zealand and Australia.
Travel
Most TEACH students choose to travel with the TEACH group to the UK. The discounted flights are made available through a travel agency. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the university about arrival details.  Families and friends are also eligible for discounted fares.
Tuition fees in the UK
Tuition fees vary depending on the university. They are also linked to the changing values of the Canadian dollar as well as the British pound. The universities usually make a small increase in tuition fees each year.
University transcripts
Please submit an original of your latest university transcript. Many students submit university transcripts with the final year subjects outlined as being in progress. This is acceptable to the overseas universities. An original final transcript should be kept by the applicant to submit it to the Faculty of Education upon registration or when requested to do so.
Visas
Visas are now necessary for studying in the UK. Click here for more information.
Working part time in the UK
International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while they are studying in the UK.
Please do not hesitate to contact TEACH if you require further information.
