The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, is the second oldest university in Scotland and the fourth oldest in Britain. Today, the University of Glasgow is one of the UK's leading universities with an international reputation for its research and teaching.
Despite being firmly rooted in the West of Scotland from where it recruits 47% of its students, the University of Glasgow attracts students from 80 countries and sends a large numbers of students on study periods abroad. Today's research projects are typically international, with academics from every continent working in Glasgow while the University's own staff make valued contributions to collaborative work with some 200 institutions worldwide.
Most of the University's 100 departments are to be found on the Gilmorehill campus, its spire is a landmark across the city. This campus has more heritage buildings than any other and reflects a vast range of styles. The circular Reading Room is a listed building from the 1930s while the Library, Boyd Orr and Adam Smith Buildings reflect post-war fashions in public building design.
