Glasgow - City of Culture

Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, is located in the west of the country and has a population of approximately 750,000. Glasgow, together with the surrounding area, is one of Europe's most exciting and beautiful destinations, combining the energy and sophistication of a great international city with some of the world's most spectacular scenery.

Named the "coolest city in the UK" by the 'National Geographic Traveller' in July 2003 and "top UK city destination" by 'Conde Nast Traveller' in 2006, Glasgow has long been known as a wonderful place to live, work, rest and play. It has a rich history that is evident in the architecture: Victorian sandstone, Italianate steeples and mediaeval spires sit alongside neo-gothic towers, the Art Nouveau of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the titanium, glass and steel of the modern city. Glasgow boasts the best shopping in the UK outside of London and, for outdoor relaxation, there are over 70 public parks, reflecting the original meaning of the word "Glasgow", which is "dear green place."

With over twenty museums and galleries, most of which are free to enter, Glasgow is home to the largest civic museum collection in the UK. These include the unique Burrell Collection, People's Palace, Gallery of Modern Art, Science Centre, Museum of Transport, Scottish Football Museum and the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, right next to campus, plus the University's own Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery.

The city's nightlife is amazing. Glasgow is home to the Scottish Opera, Scottish Orchestra, Scottish Ballet and Scottish Theatre. There are hundreds of local and international restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Glasgow also hosts some of Europe's best cultural festivals of music, comedy, film, theatre and the arts. The live music scene is vibrant - the city is home to such bands as Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian and Travis.

The University of Glasgow
Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is one of the UK's oldest and most prestigious seats of learning, with an international reputation for its research and teaching, and an important role in the cultural and commercial life of Scotland. The University has 20,000 full-time students, including around 3,000 international students from more than 100 different countries.

There are 9 faculties: Education; Arts; Law, Business & Social Sciences; Biomedical & Life Sciences; Information & Mathematical Sciences; Physical Sciences; Medicine; Veterinary Medicine; Engineering.

The University has one of the largest research bases in the UK. It is a member of the Russell Group of 19 leading research universities (the UK's "Ivy League") and is listed in the top 100 of world university rankings.

The main campus is located on Gilmorehill in the city's West End, about 3km from the city centre. The West End is a fantastic place to live and study, with bustling shopping and entertainment districts and beautiful parks.
The Faculty of Education
The Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow is an exciting, stimulating and challenging place to study. It has long traditions of involvement in teacher education, reaching back to the 19th century, in adult education and lifelong learning, with origins in the 1940s and in post graduation education. The University is home to one of the oldest and most revered education departments in Britain.

The incorporation of the oldest dedicated educational research centre in Europe (the Scottish Centre for Research in Education) makes it one of the most desirable places on the international stage in which to study. The robust, innovative, active and expanding research portfolio boasts international expertise in the areas of Teacher Education, Adult & Lifelong Learning, Science Education, Social Justice & Globalisation, Religious Education, Educational Leadership, and Cultural Politics & Education, among others. Our position as a major international research centre enables us to offer a truly research-informed approach to the pedagogical and cultural practices of education.

We enjoy strong ties to schools, education authorities and other educational bodies in Scotland, enabling us to offer a strong base in teacher education. In line with the University's ambitions, the Faculty is also enhancing its existing reputation as an international centre of choice for the study of education and the practice of teaching. With active links to a number of major universities around the world including Columbia University, University of Melbourne, University of British Columbia, Vrije University (Amsterdam), and Fatima Jinnah Women's University (Pakistan), Glasgow is the place to come if you wish to experience an education that is locally rooted and internationally valued.

All potential students will be interviewed prior to acceptance on the programme. Seminar sessions will normally take place in Canada in late January! early February. At these events Faculty staff will offer more detailed information about the programmes, the University, Glasgow and the school placements. Testimonials
I graduated with all the other teach students, and regular Scottish students, on June 22 in Glasgow. Some of my friends that I caught up with after the grad laughed: the only guys wearing kilts were Canadian! It was good though, and I had a great day celebrating with all my Scottish buddies in Glasgow.
But I just wanted to say, thank you so very much for helping me out last year with my application. The experience I had at Lomond School was amazing, and the assistance I got from the teach offices was very helpful. Thanks to everyone, I now have a great teaching position in England, which is something I could not have imagined myself being a part of a two years ago.
